2009 BETH –
WOOD BASEBALL
UPDATE
MAY 2009
BETH – WOOD BASEBALL LEAGUE (B –
W)
celebrated its 37th Opening Day
Ceremonies on Saturday, April 25th with over 500 people in attendance.
Along with local dignitaries, the Beecher Road School Band again led the
parade of Players on the Woodbridge Green. The Woodbridge Volunteer
Fire Association again did all the cooking for us and brought a few of
their vehicles for the kids to experience / climb on. The Woodbridge
Police helped coordinate traffic control. There was a karate
demonstration by World Champion Tae Kwon Do from Woodbridge. The New
Britain Rock Cats sent their Mascot "Toner" to be part of our Ceremony
(and also conducted a Hit / Run / Throw Competition at Center Field
immediately following our Ceremony) as well as other local organizations
like the Garden Club, Cub and Boy Scouts. Year after year, this has
become one of the largest community events held with more and more groups
wanting to take part - it was a beautiful day in the 80's and a great time
was enjoyed by all who attended!!

Our Season has
officially begun and all parents should have received our
2009 Beth - Wood Program Book
from their respective Team Managers / Coaches - this book contains a
wealth of information (Team Rosters, Game Schedules, Team Sponsor Ads,
Program Book Ads, Beth - Wood Board, listing of umpires,
etc.) that has been enjoyed by many.
2009 Games Schedules for all
League Divisions are now located on the web site for people to view and
download, including 2009 Batting Cage
Schedules for Minors and Majors.
Simply click on the appropriate links on the left to either view or print
these out.
We wish to recognize and thank the Town
of Woodbridge / Parks Department for
jointly working with us to convert both fields at Acorn Hill into
combination 46' / 60' and 50' / 70' diamonds. As you know, this
year, our Majors program will be participating on a 50' / 70' Baseball
field - we also understand the Town of Bethany is also planning to convert
one of their fields at the Community School into a combo field as well in
the near future, whom we will work closely with.
The B - W is currently in the process of forming
Travel Teams
again for our 9's, 10's, 11's and 12's to give those Players an additional
opportunity to play competitive baseball. We have contacted local
Cal Ripken Leagues in our surrounding area and are hoping to start
scheduling games on Sundays within the next few weeks. Stay tuned
from your Minors and Majors Managers for updates on this.
Our All Star Policies
will remain essentially unchanged in 2009. As
a reminder, for those interested in playing on the Travel 'A' Teams (ages
9 -12), there will be a full-time commitment of ALL
Players from the middle of June through the first week in August (Managers
will have the discretion to allow a day off for a special circumstance and
/ or injury only). For those interested in playing on the 'B' Teams
(ages 9 - 12) where you might not be able to make the commitment, we have
relaxed this policy and will allow more time off that should allow more
Players to participate. This information will be shared with Team Managers
/ Coaches who in turn will be sharing it with their parents.
As a reminder, Minors and Majors Team Managers will start to solicit All
Star Player nominations within the next few weeks, which will be due to be
submitted no later than Friday, May 15th. If
necessary, should we receive more than 12 Player nominations in a specific
age division, there will be mandatory try-outs held on Wednesday, May 20th
at Acorn Hill - so please plan accordingly and keep this date open.
It is truly an honor to be nominated and selected to play on one of our
All Star Teams during the summer months - many lasting friendships not
only among the Players but parents as well are formed.
Parents - if your son is nominated and you
accept, you will need to complete and return the respective Parent's
Consent Form to your Team Manager as this MUST be submitted
together with the Manager's Nomination form.
We will also be forming separate 8 -
year old All Star Teams from both the
Towns of Woodbridge and Bethany again this year to participate in an 8 -
Year Old Rookies Friendship Tournament we have held the past several years
- if you remember, the Woodbridge Team won it all last year, beating an
undefeated Newton Team in the finals, 8 exciting innings. More
information on Manager / Player Nominations will follow shortly to the
Rookies Coaches, so stay tuned.
The New Britain Rock Cats
will be hosting a Beth - Wood Family night in New Britain on
Saturday, May 30th. The Rock Cats have been a huge supporter of our
League now the past few years and a portion of the proceeds will benefit
our League - see your Team Manager / Coach for additional details or click
on the link below to print out a copy of the flyer. Get your tickets

the course with carts plus what a great way to spend a day with friends!!
